Analyse how changes in the primary structure of the haemoglobin, due to the mutation, affect its secondary and tertiary structure, ultimately leading to the formation of sickle-shaped red blood cells. (4 Marks)
Your Response:
A normal haemoglobin protein should remain linear in the primary stage, then in the secondary stage become either alpha-helix or beta-pleated then in tertiary it will condense creating a polypeptide chain, finally reaching the aggregation of zormore polypeptides, thus creating a protein. However in the diagram the abnormal (sickled cell) haemoglobin in the protein structure never moved passed the secondary structure thus not letting it form a proper protein. This will affect its ability to be transported and function efficiently in the human body
